Butt Free Australia is exclusively concerned with product stewardship: our sole purpose is to address the environmental problems caused by littering of cigarette butts.
Product stewardship initiatives such as Butt Free Australia provide avenues for everyone involved in a product chain to share responsibility for the products they produce, handle, purchase, use and discard.
British American Tobacco Australia funded the establishment of the Butt Littering Trust (trading as Butt Free Australia) in 2003, and the Trust has always openly acknowledged its origins.
Butt Free Australia also honestly acknowledges that BAT Australia is still our major contributor, and that we actively seek funding from the tobacco industry.
There has been some criticism of this approach.
Butt Free Australia understands and respects the rights of health and other organisations who choose not to accept funding from the tobacco industry.
We respectfully disagree, however, that it is inappropriate for us to do so.
Butt Free Australia is a product stewardship organisation. We openly accept tobacco industry funding because we sincerely believe that the tobacco industry must meet its responsibility to share the environmental cost of cigarette butt littering.
Butt Free Australia's activities do not condone or encourage smoking in any way whatsoever. Our ultimate aim is to educate the community and influence behaviour so that the littering of cigarette butts becomes socially unacceptable.
