Media Release: 17 December 2008
The Butt Littering Trust, Australia's leading provider of cigarette butt litter solutions, has appointed former Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria CEO, Wendy Jones as its new Executive Director.
Prior to her role with Keep Australia Beautiful Victoria, Jones was the CEO of Restaurant & Catering Victorian for five years and has a wider background in the tourism and hospitality industries.
In her new role, Jones will be utilising this experience to further develop partnerships nationally across two key priority areas – Pubs & Clubs and Transport – to help create a Butt Free Australia.
According to Jones, "Having worked in the environmental sector for the past two years, it is clear that cigarette butt litter is a key issue that needs to be addressed by all Australians and at all levels.
"It is a tough challenge, as many people do not recognise that the incorrect disposal of cigarette butts is a major litter problem, costing councils nationally millions of dollars every year and having multiple social and environmental impacts. However, I look forward to being part of the solution through the work of the Trust and its partners", Jones said.
Since its inception in late 2003, the Trust has run over 70 projects nationally and, in conjunction with its partners, has helped to reduce cigarette butt litter by over 25%. Its annual Butt Free City campaign will be held nationally from Monday 23 to Friday 27 March 2009.
While the Trust seeks funding from a variety of organisations, its founding partner is British American Tobacco Australia. The Trust is proud to have this support as it believes it is the responsibility of the tobacco industry to contribute to the costs of preventing butt littering in the environment and to help create a Butt Free Australia.
