ButtFREE Toolkit

The ButtFREE Toolkit is a comprehensive guide to developing successful cigarette butt littering reduction projects through fostering behavioural change.

In developing the Toolkit, Butt Free Australia combined current community-based social marketing theory, behavioural research and litter management expertise relevant to butt littering in Australia with its most valuable resource – practical experience of ButtFREE projects since 2003.

The Toolkit focuses on planning projects to address influences on butt littering: how, where and when people litter – or 'butt littering behaviour' – and why they litter, based on knowledge, attitudes and perceptions.

These influences and the tools required to address them are known as ButtFREE Solutions: Context, Awareness, Education, Infrastructure and Enforcement.

Toolkit structure

The Toolkit consists of step-by-step sections, each with background, actions and tools.
The sections guide the development of a project plan that can be used to:

  • seek funding/support
  • propose partnerships
  • describe a project outline to team members or stakeholders, and
  • iimplement a project

It provides tools to measure, evaluate and report project results.

The Toolkit also provides an implementation checklist as a guide to support your project management experience.

The Toolkit components can be downloaded by clicking on the section titles below.
