Once your plan is complete, the next step is to gain support and resources for its implementation. It is then important to build a team to bring the project together and deliver it on time.
The ButtFREE Toolkit provides guidance for developing a cigarette butt littering reduction project, however it is not a project management guide. The Toolkit relies on your experience and knowledge of project management to implement the project and deliver results.
Below are some general guidelines, resources and a checklist to implement the project. If further assistance is required, please contact Butt Free Australia where staff would be more than happy to provide further guidance.
Timing
Timing of when a project is conducted is crucial. Not only do you need to fit into the work schedules of the project team and partners, but also coincide activities with:
- good weather
- few competing events for media space
- sufficient numbers of people to engage
Once the timing for the campaign launch and activities is decided, the order in which each of the Solutions need to planned should be worked backwards from this date. A timeline for this purpose should be developed.
Checklist
Naturally, items that take longer to put into place – those with 'longer lead times' – come into planning first. These will most likely be, in order, partnerships followed by permanent infrastructure, education staff and resources such as personal ashtrays or bin stickers.
Media releases can usually be finalised from a draft around 2 weeks out from the project launch. Advertising and editorial will have slightly longer lead times.
Project Management
If working in a team it is very important to ensure that all members are well aware of the planned activities, timing, locations, messages, audience and approach from the beginning. Be meticulous in providing instructions and direction and ensure each person has the resources they need.
This is particularly important for project managers who will hand over public relations (Awareness) to a media departments, advertising agency or consultant. Ensure they are aware of the sensitivities and challenges related to the subject of cigarette butt littering as outlined in the Awareness Section.
Action – Implement
- Download the Implementation checklist, taking note of the lead times on each of the Solutions that you have chosen to focus on
- Draw up a project timeline and remember to share this with the project team and how and when they should time activities that they are responsible for
